Founded in 1692 by King Charles II and designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the Royal Hospital Chelsea was built as a retreat for ‘veterans broken by age and war’. For over 330 years it has been providing care for former soldiers of the British Army and is home to the famous scarlet-coated Chelsea Pensioners. Today, any former member of the British Army who faces spending their advancing years alone is eligible to become a Chelsea Pensioner.
