Royal Hospital Chelsea Hosts 11th Annual Canadian Pancake Breakfast
The Royal Hospital Chelsea was honoured to welcome His Excellency, The Right Honourable Ralph Goodale PC, Canadian High Commissioner to the UK, and members of the Canadian Armed Forces for the 11th annual Canadian Pancake Breakfast on Tuesday, 4 March 2025.
This much-loved tradition, held in the Chelsea Pensioners Club, brings together Chelsea Pensioners, Royal Hospital staff, and representatives from the High Commission of Canada to celebrate the strong bond between our two nations.

A Morning of Camaraderie and Tradition
The event was attended by 40 Chelsea Pensioners, 10 members of Royal Hospital staff, and 14 guests from the High Commission of Canada and Canadian Forces. Among the distinguished guests were Brigadier-General Dwayne Parsons, Commander and Defence Advisor, and Honorary Canadian Chelsea Pensioner Skippy Teasdale. The Royal Hospital Chelsea’s Chief Executive Officer, Colonel (Retd) David Richmond CBE, led the RHC contingent, while Lieutenant Colonel Al Merilainen CD took on the role of Master of Ceremonies.
Guests were treated to a traditional Canadian breakfast featuring pancakes, back bacon, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, and home-baked bread, all accompanied by the famous ‘Moose Milk’—a Canadian favourite. The High Commission of Canada generously provided the pancake ingredients and authentic maple syrup, ensuring a true taste of Canada.

A Relationship Built on History and Respect
Now in its 11th year, the Canadian Pancake Breakfast is more than just a meal; it is a reflection of the deep-rooted friendship between the Royal Hospital Chelsea and the High Commission of Canada. This connection is founded on a shared military history, mutual respect, and a commitment to honouring those who have served.
Colonel (Retd) David Richmond CBE expressed his gratitude for the continued support of the High Commission of Canada, highlighting the importance of events like this in strengthening ties between veterans and military communities across borders.
“We are delighted to once again host our friends from the High Commission of Canada for this wonderful tradition. The Chelsea Pensioners always look forward to this annual event, which not only celebrates great food but also the lasting friendship between our nations.”

Looking Ahead
As the Royal Hospital Chelsea continues to celebrate its enduring partnerships, events like the Canadian Pancake Breakfast serve as a reminder of the importance of tradition, camaraderie, and international friendship.
We extend our sincere thanks to the High Commission of Canada for their generosity and look forward to continuing this valued tradition for years to come.
