The Royal Hospital Chelsea welcomed a record turnout of 500 veterans at this year’s Veterans Outreach Picnic, as new research highlights the programme’s positive impact on wellbeing and loneliness
Hundreds of veterans from across the UK came together at the Royal Hospital Chelsea this summer for the annual Chelsea Pensioners Veterans Outreach Picnic, taking place on Thursday 13 August. The event, celebrating its' fourth year, brings together veterans from all three services and the Merchant Navy, with an estimated 500 veterans, careers and delivery partners joining the iconic home of the Chelsea Pensioners to enjoy a day of activities, camaraderie and access to veteran support organisations.
A positive impact on veteran loneliness
The Veterans Outreach picnic comes after the Royal Hospital released data showing that 85% of attendees reported improved wellbeing after attending regular social activities with fellow veterans. Activities such as gardening, boxing training and singing not only reduced isolation but also led to broader social benefits. Half of participants reported a better sense of purpose, 60% reported an increase in a sense of belonging, and 40% noted increased physical activity and participation in new activities.
Despite these positive outcomes, the findings also underscore the need for continued support, with 47% of older veterans initially identified as experiencing loneliness according to the UCLA 3 Loneliness Scale. The Royal Hospital Chelsea website has also seen a 390% increase in searches for Veterans Outreach events between January – June 2026 compared to the same time last year, with searches for Veterans Outreach also increasing by over 80%.

Our recent research highlights the importance of our outreach programme to older veterans and expanding our reach as far as possible. Through regular events, drop ins and our digital community Old Comrades, it is our goal to provide not only friendship but a sense of purpose, helping to ensure that those who served are always supported – both now and for generations to come. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Royal Hospital for a day of camaraderie and connection.”
