Chelsea Pensioners Bring Veterans Together at First Outreach Garden Party in the North
The Chelsea Pensioners welcomed 200 veterans to the National Memorial Arboretum for a special Garden Party, bringing the camaraderie and community of the Royal Hospital Chelsea to veterans in the North of England.
Held on Thursday 24 September, the first Chelsea Pensioners Veterans Outreach Garden Party brought together former service personnel from across the Armed Forces and Merchant Navy for a day of activities, conversation and connection, alongside opportunities to meet organisations providing support to the veteran community.
The event marks another important step in the growth of the Chelsea Pensioners Veterans Outreach Programme, which extends the Royal Hospital’s support beyond its home in Chelsea and helps older veterans across the country remain connected, independent and valued.
Bringing veterans together
For more than 300 years, the Royal Hospital Chelsea has provided a home and community for Army veterans. Through Veterans Outreach, that sense of comradeship is increasingly being shared with those living beyond the Royal Hospital’s historic walls.
The Garden Party at the National Memorial Arboretum provided an opportunity to bring that work to a new audience, welcoming veterans from all three Services and the Merchant Navy to meet one another, spend time with the Chelsea Pensioners and discover some of the support available to them.
It comes as new research from the Royal Hospital demonstrates the difference that regular opportunities to meet and take part in activities can make to older veterans.
Feedback gathered from 330 people attending Veterans Outreach events between 2023 and 2025 found that 85% reported improved wellbeing after regularly taking part in social activities with fellow veterans.
The benefits extended beyond simply spending time together. Some 60% reported an increased sense of belonging, half said they had developed a stronger sense of purpose, while 40% reported becoming more physically active and taking part in new activities.
These findings are particularly significant given that 47% of the older veterans surveyed were initially identified as experiencing loneliness using the UCLA 3 Loneliness Scale.
Reaching more veterans
Demand for Veterans Outreach is also growing. Between January and June 2026, visits to Veterans Outreach event pages on the Royal Hospital website increased by 390% compared with the same period in 2025, while searches for Veterans Outreach increased by more than 80%.
Extending support beyond Chelsea
For Giles Woodhouse, Director of Chelsea Pensioners Veterans Outreach at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, taking the programme beyond London is an important part of responding to that need.

Continuing the connection
The Garden Party forms part of a growing programme of activities designed around the interests and needs of older veterans. From gardening and singing to boxing training and social gatherings, Veterans Outreach creates opportunities to rediscover the companionship of service life, try something new and build lasting connections.
That support is not limited by geography. Through Old Comrades, the programme’s digital community, veterans can also connect with others, discover events and access news, information and resources wherever they live.
The first Garden Party in the North represents an important development in that work and in the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s wider ambition to ensure its centuries old tradition of supporting veterans continues to reach those who need it today.
