Chelsea Pensioner and CEO Step Up for the London Marathon 2025
This Sunday, our CEO David Richmond CBE and Chelsea Pensioner Dave Godwin will be taking part in the London Marathon to raise money for the Royal Hospital Chelsea. David will also raise money for the Invictus Games Foundation, for who he has been a long-term supporter.
Chelsea Pensioner, Dave Godwin will be running in the London Marathon for the first time since 1982 to help support the hospital. His training has been going extremely well, and he has enjoyed his transition to the tapering-off phase where he is reducing his daily runs and has some more flexibility with his diet.
Dave has been an avid runner for years, including in his civilian life after he left the Army. He will be taking part in the Marathon in specially adapted Scarlets designed to be more breathable while still showcasing the iconic scarlet brand.

Dave Godwin:
In 2019 I became a Chelsea Pensioner and I've never looked back – the opportunities I've had have been incredible and every day I see the work that the Royal Hospital does to provide care and comradeship to Army veterans both inside and outside our gates. At 73 years old I've been training hard for nearly a year to take on this challenge, and hope you'll help support me.
Chief Executive of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, David Richmond, will be running to support both the Royal Hospital and the Invictus Games Foundation. The Invictus Games Foundation helps support those who have been injured or who fell sick during their service, along with their families. David played a key role in the first three Invictus Games and was inspired by the transformations he witnessed from athletes who took part. This connection has motivated him to split the funds that he will raise between the Royal Hospital Chelsea and the Foundation.
David has enjoyed his training, but he has also appreciated being able to take a step back in intensity in the run-up to Sunday. He has maintained his training discipline of committing to runs come rain or shine and is looking forward to crossing the finish line on Sunday to help support both the Royal Hospital Chelsea and the Invictus Games Foundation.

David Richmond
The Royal Hospital Chelsea provides care, support, comradeship and recognition to those who served at home and abroad. Many of these men and women continue to serve by volunteering in homeless shelters, food banks, at schools and elsewhere every week. The Hospital relies on donations from the generous public to do its work and to honour the service of these old soldiers and, as CEO at the Hospital, I thank you for your support.
Everyone at the Royal Hospital Chelsea wishes David and Dave every success with their race and thank them for their incredible support.
