The restoration of the Chillianwala Memorial

The Chillianwala Memorial at the Royal Hospital Chelsea commemorates the 255 officers and soldiers of the 24th Regiment of Foot who lost their lives at the Battle of Chillianwala on 13 January 1849. Designed by the distinguished architect Charles Cockerell and completed in 1853, the imposing granite obelisk is believed to be the first British war memorial to record every fallen soldier by name, regardless of rank.

Protecting this nationally significant monument is both a responsibility and a privilege. Through specialist conservation, we will repair its historic stonework, remove damaging biological growth and staining, restore its inscriptions and renew the gilding of its finial. By supporting this vital work, you will help preserve an important part of our shared heritage, honour those whose sacrifice it records and secure the Memorial’s place at the heart of remembrance for generations to come.

Thank you for your generous support.
