Exhibition: "Scarlet Icons: Uniforms of the Chelsea Pensioners"

Chelsea Pensioners in scarlet uniforms march in formation across the lawn at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, led by an officer in black ceremonial dress. A military band performs behind them, with the historic colonnade and brick buildings in the background.

Date: 20th - 22nd February 2026

A London Fashion Week Special Exhibition

As London Fashion Week returns to the capital from 19–23 February 2026, celebrating the very best of British creativity and design, the Royal Hospital Chelsea invites you to explore one of the nation’s most enduring style statements: the iconic scarlet uniform of the Chelsea Pensioners.

Join us at the Soane Stable Yard for Scarlet Icons, a small but striking exhibition revealing how a 300‑year‑old military uniform became one of London’s most recognisable silhouettes - and an unexpected influence on the world of fashion.

Two Chelsea Pensioners in traditional scarlet uniforms stand side by side inside the Wren Chapel at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Wooden benches line the chapel, and the ornate altar and painted apse are visible behind them.

About the Exhibition

When the Royal Hospital Chelsea opened in the late 17th century, its veterans arrived wearing the uniforms of their former regiments - a vivid patchwork of colours and styles. In 1704, the now‑famous scarlet coat was introduced to unify their appearance and make the Pensioners instantly identifiable.
